Service Upgrades

ELECTRICAL PANEL & SERVICE UPGRADES

Older West Michigan homes — especially the 1950s–1980s stock common across Kalamazoo, Portage, Battle Creek, and Richland — were wired for a fraction of today's electrical load. Modern kitchens, HVAC, hot tubs, EV chargers, and home offices regularly overwhelm 60-amp, 100-amp, or split-bus panels.

ROC Electric upgrades residential services to 200-amp (and 320/400-amp where required), replaces obsolete Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, relocates meters, re-grounds to current Michigan code, and coordinates with Consumers Energy.

Signs You May Need An Upgrade

  • Frequent breaker trips
  • Flickering lights when appliances cycle
  • Warm or discolored breakers
  • A fuse box still in service
  • No room for new circuits
  • Planning a remodel, hot tub, or EV charger

EV Charging At Home

LEVEL 2 EV CHARGER INSTALLATION

ROC Electric installs Level 2 home chargers for Tesla, Ford, Chevy, Rivian, Hyundai, Kia, and every other major EV — including hardwired units and NEMA 14-50 plug installations.

We handle the full scope in-house: load calculation, a dedicated 240V circuit, weather-rated outdoor enclosures, conduit routing or trenching for detached garages, and a permit pulled with your local building authority.

Most residential 200-amp panel upgrades in West Michigan run between $2,000 and $4,500 depending on the age of your service, meter location, grounding, and whether the utility needs to reconnect the drop.
Not always. A Level 2 EV charger typically pulls 32–48 amps. If you have a modern 200-amp panel with available capacity, we can usually add a dedicated 240V circuit without a panel upgrade.
Repeated tripping usually means an overloaded circuit, a short circuit, a ground fault, or a failing breaker. Don’t keep resetting it — call a licensed electrician.
Knob-and-tube and older aluminum branch wiring can be a fire and insurance risk. We rewire older homes in phases so you can stay in the house during the work.
